Buying a private plate, explained

Once your payment has cleared, we get everything moving straight away. If you’d like the plate put on your vehicle, we’ll assign it for you free of charge – the DVLA’s online service is usually completed within a few working days, and often the same day. If you’d prefer to take the certificate, we’ll send it to you by signed-for post, and you can assign the plate yourself whenever you’re ready using the number and postcode on the certificate. Every certificate we sell has at least 12 months left to run, so there’s no rush – it just needs to be assigned before it expires.

Most of our plates are owned by us outright and held on official retention certificates in Reg Heaven’s name. These we sell to you directly, either on the certificate or assigned straight to your vehicle. We also sell a number of plates on behalf of other owners, where we act as the seller and assign the registration directly onto your vehicle to keep everything secure for you. Whichever it is, your plate is genuine and the paperwork is handled properly.

There are four main styles, and any of them can be personalised:

• Current style (2001 onwards) – two letters, two numbers and three letters, like AB12 CDE, with the two numbers showing the age. The most widely available and affordable.
• Prefix (1983–2001) – a single year letter at the front, then numbers, then three letters, like A123 BCD. A favourite for initials and names.
• Suffix (1963–1983) – three letters, then numbers, then a year letter on the end, like ABC 123A.
• Dateless (pre-1963) – no age identifier at all, like 1 AB, which makes them the most flexible and the most sought-after – they can go on a vehicle of any age.

As a general rule a plate can’t make a vehicle look newer than it is, but dateless plates are the exception.

In most cases, yes. As long as your vehicle is registered and taxed in the UK and meets the DVLA’s rules (you can’t make a car look newer than it is), we can assign the plate to it for you – often the same day, free of charge. If you’d rather not assign it straight away, you can take the certificate on our owned plates and put the plate on a vehicle whenever suits, as long as it’s before the certificate expires. Plates we sell on behalf of other owners are assigned directly to your vehicle at the point of sale.

The main one to be aware of is the DVLA’s £80 assignment fee, payable when the registration is transferred to a vehicle. This is shown on each plate’s detail page, and our prices are listed excluding it, so there are no surprises further down the line. Beyond that, the only other cost is having the physical acrylic plates made up – any registered plate maker can do these for a few pounds. No hidden charges.

Many private plates have held or grown in value over the years, particularly rare, short or dateless registrations – and unlike a car, a plate never wears out. That said, values depend on demand and nothing is guaranteed, so most of our customers buy a plate because they love it first and treat any uplift as a bonus. To secure your plate, the deposit is paid by debit or credit card. The balance is then settled by bank transfer, which keeps things secure and means there are no card fees on the larger amount. We’ll make the payment steps clear before you pay anything, so you’ll always know exactly what’s due and when.
